Distribution takes place via the selection of school learners and adults based primarily on need for mobility - those for whom the journey on foot is simply too far, or the motorised cost is too high, to bear. Through the use of surveys and questionnaires, bicycle counts and statistical research, BEN is able to determine where the greatest success can be made in getting more people to bike, more often and for more reasons, thereby addressing fundamental issues of poverty and the environment in which we all live.
The used bicycle distribution over the past financial year has been to a mix of BEC's, the City of Cape Town Sustainable Livelihoods partner groups, schools, farms, community centres and individuals in need of mobility. The great demand is with the BEC's - BEN needs to be able to secure more bikes from international and local donors and to be able to better address the huge demands the BEC's have for used bikes in the R200-R400 range.
