Taking to the streets for Andrew

Meet part of the BEN Cape Town Cycle Team riding to raise funds for BEN in memory of their dear friend Andrew Janisch

Andrew Janisch was a kind, generous and gentle soul, a loving husband and father, a true family man and friend, lover of cricket and a runner and cyclist.

In his work as Principal Engineer at the City of Cape Town’s Energy and Climate Change Unit, and before that with Sustainable Energy Africa, he did much of the deep work that galvanised discussions and actions across South Africa on the impacts and opportunities of energy efficiency, solar water heaters and rooftop photovoltaic systems. Andrew was able to make complex things understandable and communicated clearly with everyone.

He was an accomplished musician – banjo and guitar were Andrew’s great loves – who wrote, recorded and played several albums of very profound songs which remain relevant (“Handmade”- with his band Woodshed and “Moved to Change” and “Heart” his solo albums). He also recorded a song with popular Cape Town band Hot Water to help promote solar water heaters (“Get Your Piece of the Sun” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWGHAG7Dl7E&feature=youtu.be)

Andrew Janisch passed away on Friday 29 July 2016 after a sudden heart attack, leaving a gaping absence in the lives of his wife Dee and their children Julian and Erin, as well as his wider family, many friends and colleagues. A team of 13 of his friends and family are riding the Cape Town Cycle Tour this year in his memory. He rode it many times as well as running a number of races including the Two Oceans. They have decided to associate themselves with the Bicycling Empowerment Network, a cause that Andrew supported.
