BEN currently has a permanent complement of two staff members.

• Yvonne Tripod is BEN’s financial officer and project administrator. She is also instrumental in the administration of the organisation.

• Jason Kapank is our workshop manager and mechanic. He also plays a role in supporting the admin function within BEN.

In addition to this, BEN also makes use of service providers on contract.

Strategic partnerships

The communities BEN serves face deeply interconnected challenges: limited mobility, restricted access to education and employment, economic exclusion, and the daily costs of unreliable, expensive transport. A bicycle alone is a powerful tool but unlocking its full potential as a lever for social and economic empowerment requires more than just bikes being distributed into communities.

Delivering lasting change across South Africa’s under-resourced communities calls for a deliberate network of partners who together can respond to the full breadth of the need, from supply and logistics, to training, safe cycling infrastructure, and community-based enterprise. We believe strategic partnerships are central to this. For over 20 years, BEN has built relationships with international donor agencies, local corporates, government, schools, and sector specialists who share our conviction that sustainable, evidence-based investment is the most powerful lever for change.

We work closely with a number of organisations. Notably, we partner with the Pedal Power Association (PPA) on a number of key initiatives, including our joint Bike4All project and our Cool Kid on a Bike Safety initiative. One of our key collaborations is the Bicycle Distribution Programme under the Western Cape Government’s Provincial Sustainable Transport Programme.

We also enjoy a very close working partnership with Re~Cycle in the UK, one of our primary suppliers of donated bicycles.
Other partners include the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Langa Bicycle Hub, Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT), Khaltsha Cycles, the Rotary Club of Claremont, to name a few.
