Bicycle Empowerment Centres

Bicycle Empowerment Centres are bicycle businesses run by local people in their own communities. BEN supplies the bicycles at an affordable price, and the operator fixes and sells them to the members of their community.

We also train operators as mechanics and help them run their business, so each centre can sell bicycles, fix them and supply parts.

The result is a bike shop people can walk to, and an income for the person who runs it. At the moment we have thirteen centres operating across the Western Cape. If you would like to run one, get in touch below.

What a centre brings to a community

Each centre brings:

  • Affordable bicycles close to home

  • A business owned by someone local

  • Jobs and income

  • Mechanic and business skills

  • Repairs and spare parts nearby

  • A place where local riders can get help

  • More people choosing to ride
